Decorating with texture:

It’s a buzzword right now across all the major trends, but how do you go about decorating with texture?  The aim is to create a tactile feel in the room, with visual depth.  Whether it’s a modern, natural look that you are going for, or a more traditional one, here are some easy ways to bring in texture to your home.

On the walls

Introducing texture to the walls in your home adds aesthetic appeal to the room.  It also helps to disguise any uneven wall surfaces you have and hide dust, making the room appear cleaner for longer.  You can get this look with exposed brickwork, wallpaper or paint.

Wallpaper

Textured wallpaper, which is embossed with a raised design, is now widely available.  This is a simple way to bring texture into any room, whether you wallpaper all the walls, the ceiling or an accent wall.

Bold wallpapers are on trend right now and there are patterns, prints and colours to suit whatever design scheme you have.   The most popular right now are prints inspired by nature like jungle, tropical and leafy scenes, Terrazzo and 1920s style geometric and palmette prints in blacks, golds and reds.  These bold styles add both colour and drama.

Alternatively, there are wood and grass cloth effect textured wallpapers available for a more subtle way to bring in texture.  You can also paint textured wallpaper in whatever shade you want, or keep it neutral.

Paint

We are used to paint having a flat or glossy look, but it can also be textured.  Sand is usually mixed into the paint to give it this look.  You can buy pre-textured paint in a variety of colours and finishes, or make your own.

To mix a textured paint yourself, you need silica sand,which is sold in most hardware shops, specifically for mixing with paint.  It is cleaner and has a more consistent finished look than natural sand, so it is worth buying silica sand.  You can get also get a texture additive to add into the paint, to give a coarse or fine look.  Simply stir it into the paint until you have the right texture, then paint the interior wall as usual.

Another option is lime paint, which has a textured, matte finish that gives the walls a concrete type look.  It works really well when it is absorbed into masonry surfaces such as cement or brick, or it can be painted on plaster walls after a coat of primer.

Natural materials

You probably already have at least some furniture that is made of a natural material like wood.  Bamboo, cork, organic cotton and wool are also natural materials that are ideal for adding texture.  Whether it’s soft furnishings, furniture, bedding or accessories like blankets and cushions, these all work together to bring that tactile feeling to a room.

Japandi design is a big focus in interior design right now and is a great way to get inspiration for bringing in texture.  This is a style that centers on beautiful, functional furnishings made from natural materials.

If you want to bring sustainability into your home as well, choose either recycled natural materials or for wood, look for FSC certifcation, which guarantees it comes from a forest that meets both environmental and social standards.

Layering textures in a room gives you that overall look of depth and visual appeal.  Use any of the ideas above in combination to give the ultimate tactile and welcoming feel.  Glossy finishes like chrome, materials such as leather, plants and rugs also add texture into any space.
