Decorating with green paint

Decorating with green paint:

Decorating with green paint, one of the on-trend colours for this year, is a great way to get a calm, sophisticated look in the home.  Popular shades at the moment include warm greens, and green-greys.  The right shade for you will depend on the existing colour scheme and how you want the room to feel.

A calm living room

Many living rooms lend themselves naturally to a warm shade of green on the walls.  As most of us spend a lot more time at home now, green paint is a great way to create a calm and tranquil space, especially if your living room needs to double as a working from home space.

If you already have neutrals in your living room, painting the walls a darker, mossy green shade will complement them perfectly.  This has become a staple of interior design as it brings a sense of the outdoors into the home, with a peaceful and cosy feel.  It also works well with black and dark wood furniture.

For a brighter, fresher look, a slightly minty green is a good choice.  If you are not sure about having all four walls in green, an accent wall or half-painted walls are a great way to achieve a sophisticated look.  Don’t forget the ceiling, as it can look stunning used as a ‘fifth wall’ with an accent colour.

It’s always important to try a few different paint samples in the room first, to see how they look in the different light from daytime to evening. It can be surprising how paint changes once it is actually on the wall.

Freshness for the bathroom

Over the past couple of years, green bathrooms have made a comeback in a big way.  Gone are the outdated avocado green walls of the 70s,  they are now stylish and modern.

Painting the bathroom walls green can either give you a fresh, vibrant feel or a moodier, tranquil one.  Lighter shades are cool and invigorating, perfect for that just showered feeling.

Alternatively, a darker, earthier shade makes the room a relaxing place for a long soak.  Half-painted walls combined with light tiles and white fixtures keeps that fresh, airy feeling in the room.

Make sure you have the right type of paint for the bathroom, as it is often a humid environment.  A semi-gloss is best for the walls, because it is easy to wipe down and repels moisture well.

An elegant kitchen

Another room that looks gorgeous in green is the kitchen, often the heart of the home.  Half painted green walls have a really elegant look, or you can paint the cabinets or wooden furniture.  Darker greens tend to look best here, as they are both invigorating and luxurious.  Gold finishes like taps and drawer handles are ideal to finish the look.

For a dramatic contrast in the kitchen, dark green shades like sage and moss are stunning in combination with marble counter tops and light tiles.   Alternatively, a more subtle shade of green will complement crisp white tiles and lighter wood counter tops, for that clean and fresh look.

The best paint finish for cabinets is a gloss or semi-gloss and for the walls, a satin finish as it will be durable and easy to clean.  If you want a matte look, there are specialty paints available that are easy to wipe down.
