Guide to skirting boards

Guide to skirting boards:

Skirting boards, also known as baseboards, are the narrow wooden boards that run along the bottom of interior walls.  They provide a barrier between the furniture and the walls to protect them from damage, and give the room a much more streamlined finish.

Can I install skirting boards myself?

If you are good with DIY, then yes it is possible to install them yourself.  Otherwise, this is probably a job for the professionals as it will most likely be very obvious if the skirting boards aren’t fitted well.  Corners are very difficult to do properly, and often walls turn out to be uneven.

Once you have chosen the material and style of the skirting boards, you will need to cut them to the exact measurements you need with a mitre saw.  They will also need to be cut at a 45-degree angle on the corners where they meet.

This is a job that requires two or more people, as the skirting boards will need to be held level against the wall for a few minutes while the adhesive sets.  After the adhesive has fully dried (it needs to be left for a day or so), any gaps will need to be filled with caulk.

Although it looks like a fairly straight forward job, installing skirting boards can take a while and you may not end up with the finish you want.

See original image here…

Can I paint them?

You can paint skirting boards to fit in with your interior decor, whatever colour you choose.  General rules are that skirting boards in a darker colour than the walls have a modern look, and help to hide any dust and/or markings. Painted in a lighter colour, they can make the room look bigger.

Make sure you have the right type of paint, as it does make a difference.  Gloss is a good choice, as it is hard wearing and easier to scrub.  Alternatively, choose a satin finish for a more subtle look that is still durable.  You will need a good quality primer as well.

When painting the skirting boards, always make sure you have protected the room properly first.  Use painter’s tape on the walls and for the flooring or carpet, masking tape and some protective sheets or coverings.  Paint splatters very easily, so always cover a bigger area than you think you need to!

See original image here…

Do I have to have them?

Skirting boards are not essential, it’s completely your choice whether to have them in your home or not.  They aren’t just for the aesthetics though, they do have practical purposes.

Firstly, they help to protect the walls from damage that can be expensive to repair.  As they stop furniture, and other household items like toys and vacuums, getting too close to the wall, they prevent marks and scrapes.  Replacing skirting boards is far cheaper than repairing damage to the walls.

Hiding unsightly wiring is another advantage to skirting boards, and it helps to protect the cables.  You can even make them into a light source by using LED skirting.  Plus they can hide any gaps between the floors and walls, which can happen when flooring has been installed.

If you’ve moved into a house that already has skirting boards, you should be able to remove them by carefully prying them away from the wall, but be careful in case there are cables behind.  In older houses, cables may well be tacked on top of the skirting boards, so remove them first.  Always take extra care with cables as they may have electricity running through them.

Unique bedrooms for the kids

Unique bedrooms for the kids:

It doesn’t take long, or have to cost much, to make unique bedrooms for the kids.  Here’s some tips on how to give them a room that suits their personality and is truly individual.

Pick the right paint

Coloured paint is an easy and cost effective way to make bedrooms fun and stamp some personality on the walls.  A satin finish paint is the best for playrooms and bedrooms, as it is so durable.  It is also easy to clean as you can wipe down the walls, which makes life much easier with all the inevitable spills and wear and tear.

All four walls in bright colours can be overwhelming and over stimulating, so painting half walls, or an accent wall, is a good option if you want a vibrant colour.  Usually though, it is best to choose neutral, earthy tones as the main background for a calm, welcoming environment. Then you can add in some more vibrant accent colours with bedding, accessories, wall hangings and furniture.

Painting the ceiling is also a great way to inject some fun into a room, or use ceiling stickers like stars and planets.

Create a rainbow

Painting a rainbow on one wall, or across a corner, is a lovely way to bring some colour and fun into a room.  Neutral colours like blush and dusty pinks are best as they are fun but muted enough for the bedroom.  If you have a dedicated playroom though, you may want to choose stronger, brighter colours. Buy samples of each colour you like to try, as the paint can look really different once it is on the wall.  There should be enough in most samples to complete the rainbow without buying whole tins of paint.

Painter’s tape is a quick and easy way to map out where you want to paint the rainbow on the wall/s, and much easier than trying to freestyle.  Firstly, decide where you want the outer stripe to be and how thick, then stick the tape on the wall accordingly.  If it is difficult to get the tape to bend into a half circle shape, try cutting the outer edge every few cm’s where you want it to bend.  Then paint your first colour on the wall in between the lines of painter’s tape.  Once that has dried, do the next stripe inside, and so on until you have a finished rainbow.

You can of course paint whatever pattern or motif you like on the walls, but a rainbow is one of the easiest if you’re not a natural painter!  The other option is to simply buy a removable wall sticker.

Use wallpaper

There is some gorgeous patterned wallpaper available for kids, from unicorns to stars, footballs to dinosaurs and plenty more to choose from.  Wallpapering the bottom half of the walls avoids the room looking too busy, and saves a bit of money as well.  Alternatively, you can paint the walls in a neutral colour and use a wallpaper border that is patterned with something your kids like.

Since kids inevitably grow out of phases and their tastes change, removable self-adhesive wallpaper and wall decals are a great idea as they can be as temporary as you need.  There are plenty available online for a reasonable price and they are easy to apply to the walls and remove in future.

If you have any leftover wallpaper that would suit your children’s bedroom, there are plenty of ways you can use it.  It doesn’t have to just be on the walls, you can wallpaper the ceiling, parts of the walls or even glue it to furniture like a chest of drawers.

A few simple changes can make a room look and feel entirely different, giving your kids their very own unique bedroom.

Decorating with green paint

Decorating with green paint:

Decorating with green paint, one of the on-trend colours for this year, is a great way to get a calm, sophisticated look in the home.  Popular shades at the moment include warm greens, and green-greys.  The right shade for you will depend on the existing colour scheme and how you want the room to feel.

A calm living room

Many living rooms lend themselves naturally to a warm shade of green on the walls.  As most of us spend a lot more time at home now, green paint is a great way to create a calm and tranquil space, especially if your living room needs to double as a working from home space.

If you already have neutrals in your living room, painting the walls a darker, mossy green shade will complement them perfectly.  This has become a staple of interior design as it brings a sense of the outdoors into the home, with a peaceful and cosy feel.  It also works well with black and dark wood furniture.

For a brighter, fresher look, a slightly minty green is a good choice.  If you are not sure about having all four walls in green, an accent wall or half-painted walls are a great way to achieve a sophisticated look.  Don’t forget the ceiling, as it can look stunning used as a ‘fifth wall’ with an accent colour.

It’s always important to try a few different paint samples in the room first, to see how they look in the different light from daytime to evening. It can be surprising how paint changes once it is actually on the wall.

Freshness for the bathroom

Over the past couple of years, green bathrooms have made a comeback in a big way.  Gone are the outdated avocado green walls of the 70s,  they are now stylish and modern.

Painting the bathroom walls green can either give you a fresh, vibrant feel or a moodier, tranquil one.  Lighter shades are cool and invigorating, perfect for that just showered feeling.

Alternatively, a darker, earthier shade makes the room a relaxing place for a long soak.  Half-painted walls combined with light tiles and white fixtures keeps that fresh, airy feeling in the room.

Make sure you have the right type of paint for the bathroom, as it is often a humid environment.  A semi-gloss is best for the walls, because it is easy to wipe down and repels moisture well.

See original image here…

An elegant kitchen

Another room that looks gorgeous in green is the kitchen, often the heart of the home.  Half painted green walls have a really elegant look, or you can paint the cabinets or wooden furniture.  Darker greens tend to look best here, as they are both invigorating and luxurious.  Gold finishes like taps and drawer handles are ideal to finish the look.

For a dramatic contrast in the kitchen, dark green shades like sage and moss are stunning in combination with marble counter tops and light tiles.   Alternatively, a more subtle shade of green will complement crisp white tiles and lighter wood counter tops, for that clean and fresh look.

The best paint finish for cabinets is a gloss or semi-gloss and for the walls, a satin finish as it will be durable and easy to clean.  If you want a matte look, there are specialty paints available that are easy to wipe down.

Decorating with texture

Decorating with texture:

It’s a buzzword right now across all the major trends, but how do you go about decorating with texture?  The aim is to create a tactile feel in the room, with visual depth.  Whether it’s a modern, natural look that you are going for, or a more traditional one, here are some easy ways to bring in texture to your home.

On the walls

Introducing texture to the walls in your home adds aesthetic appeal to the room.  It also helps to disguise any uneven wall surfaces you have and hide dust, making the room appear cleaner for longer.  You can get this look with exposed brickwork, wallpaper or paint.

Wallpaper

Textured wallpaper, which is embossed with a raised design, is now widely available.  This is a simple way to bring texture into any room, whether you wallpaper all the walls, the ceiling or an accent wall.

Bold wallpapers are on trend right now and there are patterns, prints and colours to suit whatever design scheme you have.   The most popular right now are prints inspired by nature like jungle, tropical and leafy scenes, Terrazzo and 1920s style geometric and palmette prints in blacks, golds and reds.  These bold styles add both colour and drama.

Alternatively, there are wood and grass cloth effect textured wallpapers available for a more subtle way to bring in texture.  You can also paint textured wallpaper in whatever shade you want, or keep it neutral.

Original image featured here…

Paint

We are used to paint having a flat or glossy look, but it can also be textured.  Sand is usually mixed into the paint to give it this look.  You can buy pre-textured paint in a variety of colours and finishes, or make your own.

To mix a textured paint yourself, you need silica sand, which is sold in most hardware shops, specifically for mixing with paint.  It is cleaner and has a more consistent finished look than natural sand, so it is worth buying silica sand.  You can get also get a texture additive to add into the paint, to give a coarse or fine look.  Simply stir it into the paint until you have the right texture, then paint the interior wall as usual.

Another option is lime paint, which has a textured, matte finish that gives the walls a concrete type look.  It works really well when it is absorbed into masonry surfaces such as cement or brick, or it can be painted on plaster walls after a coat of primer.

See original image here…

Natural materials

You probably already have at least some furniture that is made of a natural material like wood.  Bamboo, cork, organic cotton and wool are also natural materials that are ideal for adding texture.  Whether it’s soft furnishings, furniture, bedding or accessories like blankets and cushions, these all work together to bring that tactile feeling to a room.

Japandi design is a big focus in interior design right now and is a great way to get inspiration for bringing in texture.  This is a style that centers on beautiful, functional furnishings made from natural materials.

If you want to bring sustainability into your home as well, choose either recycled natural materials or for wood, look for FSC certifcation, which guarantees it comes from a forest that meets both environmental and social standards.

Layering textures in a room gives you that overall look of depth and visual appeal.  Use any of the ideas above in combination to give the ultimate tactile and welcoming feel.  Glossy finishes like chrome, materials such as leather, plants and rugs also add texture into any space.

Removing stubborn wallpaper

Removing stubborn wallpaper:

Trying to redecorate for the new year but having trouble with stubborn wallpaper?  The bad news is that you do need to get it off the wall, as you’ll get air bubbles if you wallpaper over it, or the finish won’t be great if you paint over it.  The good news is that there is a way, it just may take a bit of time.

First things first

Always protect your furniture and flooring before you start removing wallpaper.  Remove what furniture you can and move the rest into the middle of the room. Then cover any remaining furniture and the flooring with plastic sheeting or dust sheets.  Cover all switches and sockets with plastic sheeting and painter’s or masking tape.  It is also essential to make sure you have switched off the electricity for the room.

If you have drywall, you will need to be very careful as it is more fragile than plaster.  You can tell by knocking on the wall – drywall produces an empty, hollow sound.

Next, try gently removing a bit of wallpaper with a putty knife.  This will give you a idea of how easily it comes off the wall and also how many layers of wallpaper there are.  If it comes off without a problem, you can simply use a remover solution to remove the rest of the wallpaper.

See original image here…

Tackling stubborn wallpaper

If you live in an older house or the wallpaper has been up for many years, it may well take more time and work to remove it.  Older wallpaper is much harder to remove than modern types, and there may well be a few layers hiding behind.

A steamer is the best idea for getting rid of stubborn wallpaper, they can be rented from most DIY shops.  You will need to wear both goggles and heat resistant gloves to avoid any burns from the steam.  Make sure you read the instructions carefully before you get started.

Place the steamer on a sturdy piece of wood or metal so it doesn’t damage your floor or furniture.  Do not allow it to boil dry at any point.  Once you have filled it and can see steam starting to rise, you are ready to get started.  Choose one side of the wall to start from and work your way from the bottom to the top, or top to bottom, of each section.

Hold the steamer to the wallpaper for at least ten seconds, so the steam can get to work and loosen it.  Once it is starting to come away from the wall, set the steamer down carefully and use a putty knife to remove that section of wallpaper.  Slide the knife under the wallpaper, being careful not to dig into the wall.  Work your way across the wall section by section.

See original image here…

The clean up

Once you have stripped off all the stubborn wallpaper, the odds are there will be adhesive left on the wall, which also needs to be removed.  You can buy remover solution, or make your own with hot water, washing up liquid and a spoonful of baking soda.  If the glue is really stubborn, add in some vinegar, around half a cup per litre of solution.  Use a spray bottle to spray it on the wall, or put it in a container and use a sponge to wipe it onto the wall, squeezing out the excess liquid first.  Then, scrub the wall with an old cloth to remove the glue.  Any remaining glue can be scraped off with a putty knife.  Once the wall is entirely clear, wipe with a clean cloth to remove the solution.

Then let the walls dry completely before starting to hang new wallpaper or painting.  If there is any damage to the walls, now is the time to fix it with some joint compound.
