With a new year on the way and some time off work, now could be a great time to freshen up your home. It doesn’t need to be a huge project or cost the earth, there are some easy ways to give it a new lease of life.
A fresh coat of paint
This is one of the simplest and most cost effective ways to brighten up any room. Whether it’s a new coat of the same paint or a different colour, it freshens up your home straight away.
The 2022 colours are a good source of inspiration, with many influenced by nature like Dulux’s Bright Skies, a light blue reminiscent of open skies and fresh air. There will also be a lot of warm, dark greens and bolder colours like yellow.
Make sure you have prepared the room properly before you paint, by moving furniture out where possible and using drop cloths to protect the flooring. Use painter’s tape to protect any moldings or trim, round the doors and windows, outlets and switches. Always make sure you allow plenty of time for the paint to dry thoroughly as well.

Try a bold wallpaper
Wallpaper is one of the biggest trends in interior design right now, especially in bold patterns and vibrant colours. This is one of the best ways to instantly transform any room.
Tropical prints, nature scenes, art deco designs and terrazzo patterns are becoming increasingly popular. If you don’t want to go that bold on all four walls, consider an accent wall or wallpapering the ceiling.
There are different wallpaper finishes available too; vinyl is popular as it is durable, versatile, easy to maintain and remove. It is ideal for damp environments like bathrooms and kitchens.
The most durable wallpaper is solid sheet vinyl, which is often embossed. Fabric wallpaper is another great way to add texture to a room, especially if you have a neutral colour scheme.

Wall panels & niches
Wall panels give character to an otherwise plain wall and give you a canvas to experiment, from wallpapering in the panels to hanging framed pictures within them. You can purchase mdf wood panels from most hardware shops. For our guide to sticking them on the walls, see here…
Similarly, wall niches, or alcoves, add interest to a room as well as giving you extra storage. They are ideal for displaying art, flowers, candles and photos without having too many shelves.
The niche itself can be used as a feature. Try painting it a few shades darker than the walls to highlight it, or use a paint that complements the wallpaper. Soft lighting in the niche always works well and gives a cosy feel to the room.
These alcoves can be created, but only in stud walls. Consider calling the experts in for this job, to check if there are any pipes or wires in the wall.

Paint the exterior
Another way to give your home a new lease of life is a fresh coat of exterior paint. This is a much bigger job (and one it’s probably best to get a professional to do for you) but it is worth the effort.
Make sure you are properly prepared and wait for a week when it’s not raining, so the paint can adhere properly.
For a much smaller job that still makes a big difference, give the front door a new coat of paint. Prep the door first by sanding it, then use a good exterior primer as it makes a difference to the end result. A paint sprayer can make the job easier, especially if you have a paneled door.
