Choosing paint for ceilings

Choosing paint for ceilings:

Whether you’re hiring the professionals or tackling the job yourself, what is the best paint for ceilings?  You may be able to use some that you have already, or decide to invest in some ceiling paint.  Here is our guide to paint for ceilings.

Can I use the paint I already have?

paint for ceilingsIt’s always important to choose the right type of paint in the house as different finishes suit different walls, and the ceiling is no different.

You don’t have to buy special ceiling paint but it is best to use flat paint if not.  This is the most popular type of paint for ceilings as it does not directly reflect the light, so it does not highlight imperfections.

A glossy paint will create a lot of glare from the ceiling, especially if there is a lot of natural light in the room, whereas a flat one will reduce it.

For the bathroom ceiling, especially in the shower stall, a semi-gloss is fine as it has more water resistance.  It will give you a shinier look, but this is not usually an issue in the bathroom as far less time is spent in there.

It’s a good idea to use a primer with normal paint as well, especially if the ceiling is less than perfect.  If you do notice ceiling cracks, it is important to work out if they are a problem or not before decorating.  If you are not sure, it is always best to consult an expert.

Is ceiling paint worth it?

Yes, it is worth investing in a ceiling paint, as it will give you the best possiblepaint for ceilings finish.  Whilst most types of paint are suitable for a number of different areas, ceiling paint is different as it is more viscous and only appropriate for that area.  As it has this higher viscosity (meaning it is much thicker, semi-fluid), it drips much less than ordinary paint.  This means painting the ceiling is made easier as you won’t end up with the usual mess on the floors and walls, and you get a better finish on the ceiling itself.

Even better, it only requires one coat which makes the job a lot less strenuous if you are doing it yourself.  It also gives you more choice with the sheen and will help to cover up a ceiling that was painted dark before.

Ceiling paint is specifically designed to hide imperfections and cover cracks, with a good layer of coverage.  The finish is usually flat white as this is generally preferred for ceilings. It is thicker than normal wall paint and not as durable, because you won’t be scrubbing the ceiling to clean it, as you can with walls.  Plus it covers stains far better.

Which colour is best for the ceiling?

paint for ceilingsThe most popular colour for the ceiling by far is white, or an off-white.  Any neutral works well though, as you can easily match them to the colour family of the walls.

This clean, simple look allows you to either complement your walls, or highlight the colour on them.  It also reflects natural light around your room, which making it appear brighter.  A slightly lighter colour on the ceiling than the walls will create the illusion of a larger room.

However, a growing trend is to paint the ceiling a darker colour than the walls, to make it an accent wall, also known as the fifth wall.  This looks stunning in a room with a high ceiling, as it adds intimacy.  For a chic, sophisticated look, choose a hue that is  two or three shades darker than the wall colour.  It is best if the ceiling is very flat, with little to no damage, if you are going to highlight it in this way.
