Should I wallpaper the ceiling?

Should I wallpaper the ceiling?:

A rising trend in interior design this year is to wallpaper the ceiling.  Think of it as a ‘fifth wall’ which you can use as an accent wall to add a pop of colour or pattern to the room.  It gives a wonderful sense of style to the room and makes it appear larger, as the eye is drawn upwards.

Can I wallpaper any ceiling?

There are some ceilings which do not fare well with wallpaper, so you need to assess them first.  If you have an old Should I wallpaper the ceiling?house that is prone to ceiling cracks, you may find that wallpaper will buckle as further cracks emerge.  This is not a trend that can be used to hide imperfections, as they will simply show through.

You need to be sure that paper will adhere well to your ceiling.  If you have a popcorn ceiling, it is unlikely that the paper will stick well enough and the texture will probably show through which ruins the finish.

If the ceiling is good enough to be wallpapered, you will need to first fix any cosmetic cracks or imperfections.  Then sand the area and make sure the ceiling is clean before using primer and then hanging the wallpaper.  Don’t be tempted to skip the prep work as it is essential to achieve the perfect finish, and will help in future if you decide to remove the wallpaper.  Wallpapering the ceiling is not an easy job, but you can of course make life a lot easier by getting the experts to do it for you.

Any room can benefit from this style trend, including bathrooms and hallways.  The kitchen, laundry room and any room with large windows and doors and/or lots of shelving are great choices as there is not much wall to paper, whereas you still have the whole ceiling to create an effect.

What type of wallpaper should I use?

There are different kinds of wallpaper available; traditional which needs glue applied to it, pre-glued and removable. Should I wallpaper the ceiling?

The best kind to use will depend on how long you want to have the wallpaper up for, as they will last for different lengths of time.  Although removable is certainly easier to use, as it comes with a peel-off backing, it may not have the lifespan of more traditional wallpaper, especially high quality ones.  This will be ideal though, if you like to change style more frequently as it will be easier to remove.

For the bathroom, you should use a water resistant type.  There are special vinyl types available that are water resistant, or you can choose a foil wallpaper as the surface will naturally repel water.  Adding a coat of clear matt varnish over the wallpaper, once hung and dried, will give it an extra layer of protection.

What colour or pattern should it be?

Should I wallpaper the ceiling? This is a great way to add character to a room as well as to enhance its proportions, so go as bold as you dare.  There are so many stunning choices these days when it comes to patterns, from floral to geometric and tropical.  Larger scale patterns are easier on the eye, with a repeat of roughly 12 inches, but smaller scale ones will help to disguise any mistakes you make with the wallpaper.

If your style is more classic or that suits the architecture better, then neutral, muted hues in floral and geometric patterns lend an effortless twist to design.

When it comes to colour, there are a few things to consider.  Darker colours may weigh down a room but will make it feel cosy if that is what you’re looking for, and lighter will make a smaller room appear larger.  For very small spaces, metallic wallpaper can be great for reflect light, giving the illusion of a bigger space.
