Wallpaper for the living room

Wallpaper for the living room:

If it’s time to spruce up the heart of your home, using wallpaper for the living room is a great way to inject more personality into the space.  It doesn’t need to be on every wall, you can choose one as a feature or even use the ceiling.

Why choose wallpaper?

Wallpaper for the living roomMany interior designers recommend wallpaper as it brings a great sense of style to a room.  It is versatile and can be as traditional or modern as you like.  Removable wallpaper is also available if you want to change the look of your living room more frequently.  From classic striped patterns to bold chevrons, ombre or gorgeous floral, there is a world of choice.

If you don’t want to paper all the walls, an accent wall is the perfect way to make a feature that draws the eye.  A bold design around the chimney breast will immediately change the focus of the room and highlight the architectural feature.  Similarly, using wallpaper on the wall where the tv is makes a great showcase.

For busy family homes, wallpaper is ideal as it is so durable and easy to maintain.  There are many scrubbable types available now too, for those times when crayons have been left unattended!  Wallpaper has multiple advantages and can be easily removed and replaced in future if needed.

How do I choose wallpaper?

As with all interior decorating, you need to consider the size of the room as well as the lighting, and the style of your home.  Smaller scale patterns work well in larger rooms, but can be overwhelming in a smaller space.  Larger scale patterns tend to workWallpaper for the living room well in most spaces.

If your living room gets a lot of natural light, it can make the wallpaper appear lighter, and vice versa.  The best way to test this is to stick a sample of the wallpaper you like on the wall and see how it appears to change throughout the day, with natural and artificial light.

If you want a sense of calm and relaxed style, a textured neutral wallpaper is perfect and still brings the wow factor to your living room.  To make your living room more vibrant, go for a hit of colour or a more adventurous design.  Darker tones likes navy and deep red will make the space cosy and welcoming, whilst lighter hues like cream and grey will give the illusion of more space.

For a period home, a traditional design will fit well and there are many contemporary options for the more modern home.  Stripes are a popular choice, especially combined with paneling.  Vertical stripes are always stunning and will make a room with a low ceiling look taller.  For a living room adjacent to the garden, a design inspired by nature is an easy way to create a sense of flow from the inside to the outside.

Don’t be afraid to mix wallpapers either; stripes and florals can look gorgeous in combination, as long as you choose colours that complement each other.  Have a look at a colour wheel (there are many available free online) to make sure you’ve got the right ones.

Can I wallpaper the ceiling?

Yes, you absolutely can!  Think of the ceiling as the fifth wall in the room, it can be your accent Wallpaper for the living roomwall (also known as a statement ceiling).  Using the ceiling really makes an impact in the room and catches the eye immediately.  It can also be used to hide any cosmetic damage that exists (but do make sure it is a purely cosmetic issue).

A bold choice against neutral walls will make a unique statement.  It’s a way to bring in a design that might overwhelm the room if used on all four walls. Or alternatively, a neutral textured wallpaper like a tile design will add an extra element to the room.  With a subtle design, there’s no reason you can’t use the same wallpaper on all the walls and the ceiling too.

Be warned though, this is not an easy task to do yourself.
