Green paint tips for the living room

Green paint tips for the living room:

You may have noticed a lot of green in interior design this year, from social media posts to magazine photo shoots, it’s been everywhere.  If you like the look, it’s actually fairly simple to incorporate it into your home decor and looks fabulous in the living room.

Why green?

When it’s time to give your living room a makeover with a new coat of paint, you want a colour that will be welcoming and cheerful.  Green is a really popular choice right now, in a variety of shades. As the colour of harmony and renewal which echoes hues of the natural world, green is a huge part of current interior design trends like the New Nordic.  With so much time spent at home this year, many people are looking to nature for inspiration and choosing peaceful, calming colour schemes.  The right shade of green gives a fresh, energising look to your space.

If you ask Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services at Behr, this “Pinterest Green” phenomenon, as I’ve taken to calling it, has something to do with the fact that this earthy shade of green is a stable, soothing color derived from nature. “Using the color green in your home can evoke a strong sense of wellbeing, peace, and tranquility,” explains Woelfel. Moreover, if you’re feeling anxious, “Greens evoke a feeling of calm, making them great contenders for your home if you are looking to reduce stress,” adds Patrick O’Donnell, global ambassador for Farrow & Ball.

Which shade?

There is a huge range of green paints available so you will be able to find the perfect one for your home. Mossy, sagey greens are popular as is mint green, which is perfect for freshening up a space.  Your existing decor will make a difference; greens look stunning contrasted with greys, whites and beiges which are common in most homes already but it can be a bit more challenging to make it work it alongside yellows or purples.

A perfect alternative to greys and neutrals, a dark green living room can make dark spaces appear rich, while muted tones such as an all-over sage green living room creates the illusion of a larger space. Bright emerald and lime hues are perfectly paired with whites and creams, and teal shades work in harmony with metallics.

There are some general rules which can come in handy when choosing the right colour.  Smaller spaces can be opened up with lighter shades while a larger room gives you the freedom to go for bold, dark hues and create a cosy space.

If you are trying to make a room look a bit more elegant and upscale, you can try a bold, bright green color on the walls. If you are trying to make a room look more modern, you can add a few darker shades of green on the walls to create a more chic effect.

Once you have an idea of the shade you want, try it!  Colours can often look very different when they are on your wall.

Viewing paint colors online can be tricky as your computer screen monitor can vary how it receives color. (There are different types of quality of your LCD screens as one example.) It does help when companies offer different room views using the color of paint, but I almost ALWAYS go into a store to pick up physical paint swatches. I will get ideas online, but rarely do they look the same in your hands! After picking up a couple dozen (no joke), I bring them home to tape to the wall of the room we are going to paint. The color of your paint will look differently depending on how much natural light it receives. So often I have picked up a paint swatch that looks completely different than I originally guessed it would be.

You can also use accessories in the shade of green you like to see how they look when they are in your home.

Farrow and Ball have a wonderful, earthy Sap Green which opens up smaller spaces and a great shade for larger rooms is Duck Green, both in their Colour by Nature palette.  Dulux have an online tool to help your pick your colour, see here, or alternatively Herts Decorators offer a fantastic range of paint colours to match your colour scheme.

Which wall?

You don’t necessarily need to paint all the walls in your living room, a feature wall is a good way to bring in the colour you love and make a bold impression.

Feature walls provide great opportunities to experiment with textures, shapes, colors, and patterns. Also called accent walls, they offer a quick and easy way to liven up the space, and depending on what material you choose, they can be very low cost. Feature walls can be high impact, but they do not have to be. Sometimes a subtle pattern can inject just the right amount of interest into a room without overwhelming the space.
